Strangely, the desktop shows the same icons for files in the two displays, however, the desktop background differs. If you move these three fingers vertically it let you see how many of these you have and can add more.

So with just moving three fingers at the same time in the pad, I can go from a desktop with full applications on it to an empty desktop.

I haven't tried rebooting yet, due to the loss of state a reboot causes in my setup that I would like to avoid and have no guarantee that a reboot would fix this. When using Mac OSX there is a feature available that let you multiply your desktop very simply. But I don’t waste cycles on this arrangement either. This takes less than a second and it doesn’t require me to turn my head and refocus my eyes on content in a different spot. On my Mac, I can 3 finger swipe to quickly switch between multiple virtual desktops. I'm not sure whether this is a feature or a bug. Both Mac and Windows support virtual desktops now. If I manually choose Window menu to select window that was not in the current cycle, I end up in the other set, and can cycle through those now. When in the Finder, using Ctrl-Tab to switch between windows only half are cycled through, with an extra blank position in the cycle with no window receiving focus. Anyways, here are two easy ways to create desktop shortcuts on Mac running macOS Big Sur or Catalina.

The second method is also quick, but it at times copies the folder instead of making the shortcut. The first method below is the one I prefer. When I use Alt-Tab to switch between applications, half are in one display and the rest in another display, such that when switching to one in a different half the screen as a whole shifts left or shifts right by a full screen width to reveal the display that are in the current set, as if the two displays were to the left and right of each other. You can add shortcuts for folders and apps to the desktop or Dock of your Mac.

It is as if I have two displays fighting to be shown on the 4K monitor, with my windows split between the two, some on one, some on the other. I'm using an external 4K monitor with my MacBook Pro Retina. Recently, I'm observing weird behavior when switching between applications and also when switching between some Finder windows.
